Root Glen
This seven-acre nature haven sits behind the admissions office of Hamilton College, between its north and south campuses. It was begun in 1850 and tended by Elihu Root, a Nobel prize winner and government official for whose family the glen is named. The quiet garden features an abundance of trees, shrubs, and flowers and is populated by birds, squirrels, and other small creatures. Pathways through the glen invite strolling, although visitors often just sit and enjoy the beauty and solitude.

Utica Marsh
Bounded by the Mohawk River and the Barge Canal and close to both train tracks and the Expressway, this urban marsh is a surprising oasis for local wildlife. Its 213 acres have been maintained and monitored by local groups, and now, egrets, geese, ducks, beavers, foxes, and even deer can be found within its environs. Observation towers provide panoramic views, and trails guide visitors through the preserve. The marsh’s plant life is beautiful as well, even to motorists who speed past on the highway.
